ここに紹介するのは僕が自分のために作成した佐野元春のコンピレーションである。もともとは僕が大学生の頃に編集したヘッドフォン・ステレオで聴くためのカセットテープであったが、CDを経て、今ではiPodのプレイリストである。

全体は二つのパートに分かれている。最初のパートは「A KIND OF GRAFFITI」と題されたロックンロール・ベスト（CDでは二枚組）、もう一つは「PURIFYING AT MIDNIGHT」というタイトルのバラッド・ベストである。この構成は当初から変わっていない。

タイトルは「IT'S A KIND OF GRAFFITI 〈それはある種のラクガキ〉」という佐野元春の詩から取っている。この詩は第一期の「THIS」VOL.1に収録されているが、現在絶版で容易に入手できないので、特別に佐野元春本人の許可を得て掲載した。興味のある人は是非読んでみて欲しい。
